Ghana Inaugurates Completed Tema Port Expansion

By: Ships and ports

Ghana's President, John Mahama, has officially inaugurated the fully completed Tema Port Expansion Project. This project, a joint venture known as Meridian Port Services (MPS) between APM Terminals, Africa Global Logistics, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, represents one of the country's most significant maritime infrastructure developments in decades.

The expanded facility now features four new berths, a 1,400-meter quay, and 127 hectares of terminal space. This upgrade increases the port's container handling capacity to 3.7 million TEUs, positioning it as one of West Africa's most advanced and efficient container terminals.

The modernization is a strategic national investment designed to secure Ghana's maritime competitiveness. By accommodating larger vessels and boosting cargo throughput, the port is expected to reduce ship turnaround times, lower logistics costs, and improve supply chain reliability for the wider sub-region.

This enhancement solidifies Ghana's role as a critical trade hub in West Africa, a timely development as economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) advances. Officials anticipate the port will attract new investment, increase export capacity, and support long-term economic growth.

Industry analysts observe that the modernization strengthens Ghana's ability to compete with other major regional terminals, such as those in Lagos, Abidjan, and Lomé, in capturing growing trade volumes.
