Ethiopian carrier launches Chile–China cherry flights

By: Fresh plaza

Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services has begun its 2025–2026 cherry season by transporting the first shipment of cherries from Chile to China. The start of operations marks the beginning of one of the busiest periods for global fruit logistics, with high seasonal volumes moving from Latin America to Asian markets.

The airline stated that the successful handling of the first load demonstrates its readiness for the new season. Cherries require fast transit times and controlled cold-chain conditions, and the carrier reports that it has expanded capacity in these areas through its long-haul freighter network and cargo hubs.

As Africa's largest air cargo operator, Ethiopian Cargo continues to link the continent to global trade routes while also participating directly in perishable flows between producing and consuming regions. The Chile–China cherry movement reflects sustained demand in Asian markets for premium fruit during a short harvest window.

Cherries remain one of the most time-sensitive fruits in international trade, and airlines play a central role in maintaining quality during peak shipping periods. Ethiopian Cargo's operation for the opening weeks of the season highlights the growing role of Africa-based carriers in global perishables transport.

With the 2025–2026 season now underway, the airline reports it is preparing to support producers and buyers throughout the high-volume period while increasing Africa's presence in international fruit logistics.
