Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority seeks African market expansion with Namibia port deal

By: Zawya

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Namibian Ports Authority to expand its presence in Africa and open new markets. SCA Chairperson Osama Rabie stated that the agreement aims for "fruitful and constructive" cooperation in port development and maritime training, aligning with the authority's strategy to undertake external projects.

The MoU focuses on exchanging expertise in marine construction works and the sale or leasing of marine units, as well as providing advanced maritime training through SCA's academies. Nangiola Hamyunela, Chairperson of the Namibian Ports Authority, noted that utilizing SCA's technology and experience would accelerate their ambitious port development plan, reducing reliance on expertise from outside the continent.

Rabie cited the SCA's recent success in reopening Libya's Sirte port after a 14-year closure as a model for such international cooperation. Following the signing, the Namibian delegation toured SCA facilities, including shipyards, a buoy factory, and the maritime simulation academy, to inspect marine units and training capabilities.
