Egypt offers industrial and green energy expertise to drive COMESA integration
Egypt is prepared to transfer its expertise in establishing specialised industrial zones and green energy projects to member states of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Sunday.
In a meeting with COMESA Secretary-General Chileshe Kapwepwe, Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting the bloc’s institutions to achieve its developmental goals. He expressed readiness to share Egyptian experience in operating specialised economic zones, solar energy initiatives, and green economy projects to facilitate trade and industrial integration.
Abdelatty highlighted the strategic importance of the Lake Victoria-Mediterranean Sea Navigation Link (VIC-MED) project. He described it as a vital initiative for regional connectivity and sustainable development across the continent.
The Foreign Minister underscored the need to increase intra-regional trade to address current economic challenges. He identified health, pharmaceutical industries, tourism, and infrastructure as priority areas for enhanced cooperation and the development of links between member states.
Abdelatty also expressed appreciation for Kapwepwe’s efforts during Egypt’s recent chairship of the bloc, which he said contributed to deepening economic integration. He reaffirmed Cairo’s full support for the COMESA Secretariat and its staff to ensure they can effectively implement the organisation’s programmes.
Kapwepwe praised Egypt’s active role in supporting the assembly’s activities and regional economic integration paths. She stated that the COMESA Secretariat looks forward to continued cooperation with Egypt to achieve development and prosperity for all member states.
