Egypt finishes 650 MW Red Sea wind farm, boosting MENA expansion

By: Energies media

Egypt has officially commissioned the massive 650 MW Red Sea Wind Farm in Ras Ghareb, marking a significant milestone in the nation's renewable energy expansion. Developed by a global consortium led by utility giant Engie, the project was completed four months ahead of schedule, underscoring a rapid acceleration in the global push for decarbonization.

The project's commissioning was executed in a phased approach, ensuring a careful and systematic integration into the national grid:

  • 306 MW in December 2024
  • 194 MW in April 2025
  • 150 MW in June 2025

This final phase represents an expansion of the existing site, bringing its total capacity from 500 MW to 650 MW. The project also set a remarkable safety record, achieving 7 million work hours without a lost-time injury.

Powering a Million Homes and Cutting Emissions

The Red Sea Wind Farm is a cornerstone of Egypt's strategy to meet the energy demands of its growing population with locally sourced, clean power. The facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than one million homes and will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1.3 million tons annually.

The project's financial viability is secured by a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), guaranteeing long-term revenue.

A Consortium Effort Solidifies Regional Leadership

  • The project was developed by a consortium comprising:
  • ENGIE – 35%
  • Orascom Construction PLC – 25%
  • Toyota Tsusho Corporation – 20%
  • Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation – 20%

Paulo Almirante, ENGIE’s Executive Vice President for Renewable & Flexible Power, stated that the project demonstrates the group's "industrial performance and ability to develop large-scale renewable projects in record time." He noted that with this commissioning, ENGIE now operates nearly 1 GW of wind power capacity in Egypt, solidifying its position as a renewable energy leader in Africa and the Middle East.

The successful completion of the Red Sea Wind Farm signals strong international confidence in Egypt's renewable sector and is poised to catalyze further investment, helping to position the country as a regional hub for wind power.
