Colombia and Ghana discuss direct maritime trade route

By: Fresh plaza

The Vice President of Colombia, H.E. Francia Elena Márquez Mina, led a business delegation to Ghana’s Port of Tema to discuss enhanced maritime and trade cooperation with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). The visit, hosted by the Port of Tema’s Acting Director, Tebon Zumah, was part of a three-day state tour aimed at strengthening South-South cooperation between the two nations.

Discussions focused on practical infrastructure and logistics cooperation, moving beyond diplomatic engagement. A key proposal was the establishment of a direct maritime shipping route between major Colombian ports and Ghana. Currently, cargo between the regions often relies on transshipment via Europe or North America, which increases transit times and costs.

The Vice President proposed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to formalize collaboration between Colombian ports and the GPHA, creating a framework for cooperation on port operations, logistics, and trade facilitation.

In line with Colombia's Vision 2030 strategy to bolster ties with Africa, Vice President Márquez Mina invited GPHA leadership to the African Trade Forum, which Colombia plans to host in March 2026 to foster trade dialogue between Africa and Latin America.

The delegation toured key Port of Tema facilities, including the MPS Terminal 3 container terminal and the Fruit Terminal, highlighting a shared interest in perishable goods logistics and cold chain management, relevant to both countries' agricultural exports.
