Burhan receives message from South Sudan's Kiir on oil and energy cooperation

Sudan's Sovereign Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has received a written message from South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit, focused on enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation. The message was delivered by President Kiir’s security adviser, Tut Gatluak, during a meeting in Port Sudan, which was also attended by Sudan’s Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA), the communication emphasized strengthening ties between Khartoum and Juba and expanding collaboration in key sectors. In response, Chairman al-Burhan directed all relevant Sudanese government institutions to engage with their South Sudanese counterparts to discuss matters of mutual interest, with priority given to cooperation in energy, oil, trade, and broader economic and political relations.

This diplomatic exchange follows a recent agreement in which the South Sudanese government, alongside the Sudanese government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), assigned the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to secure the Heglig oil field in West Kordofan. The agreement came after the RSF seized control of the facility, highlighting the continued centrality of oil infrastructure and exports to the bilateral relationship amid Sudan's ongoing instability.
