Bahrain to develop 150MW solar power plant to advance carbon neutrality goals

By: Utilities middle east

Bahrain has launched plans for a 150MW solar power plant near Bilaj Al Jazayer as part of its strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2060 and boost private sector collaboration in renewables.

According to the report by GlobalData, the initiative aims to bolster the use of renewable energy sources within the Kingdom and strengthen national efforts to promote environmental sustainability. A consortium comprising international and local consultancy companies has been appointed to manage the project.

KPMG Fakhro will act as financial adviser, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as technical adviser, and Trowers & Hamlins as legal adviser. The team will oversee the project in line with the release of the tender.

Spanning 1.2 square kilometres near Bilaj Al Jazayer in southern Bahrain, the solar power plant will feature advanced solar technologies to meet the Kingdom’s rising energy demand and ensure long-term energy security.

Once operational, the facility is expected to supply electricity to around 6,300 homes and reduce carbon emissions by more than 100,000 tonnes per year.

GlobalData further notes in its report that the project underscores Bahrain’s broader sustainability objectives and commitment to expanding renewable energy utilisation, while also deepening collaboration with the private sector to increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix.
