Bahrain launches first major utility-scale solar project

By: Utilities Middle east

Bahrain has unveiled plans for its first large-scale solar power project, marking a pivotal step in the kingdom’s push toward a sustainable energy future.

According to Consultancy-me.com, the 150 MW facility will be built in the southern region near Bilaj Al Jazayer, covering around 1.2 square kilometres. Scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2027, the plant is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 6,000 homes and cut over 100,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, supporting national environmental and energy resilience goals.

The project forms part of Bahrain’s National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP), which targets raising clean energy in the national mix to 20% by 2035. The plan sets milestones of 5% by 2025 and 10% by 2035, through a mix of solar, wind and biogas projects, Consultancy-me.com stated.

According to Anu Chaudhary, Partner and Global Head of ESG Consulting at Uniqus, the project could generate around 480 GWh of clean power annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 392,000 tonnes. “Beyond helping the environment, this move can also reduce reliance on fuel price swings, allow more hydrocarbons to be exported, and strengthen energy security as demand grows with urban and industrial development,” she told Consultancy-me.com.

Tendering for private sector developers is expected in Q4 2025, following a Global Market Sounding exercise launched this month by Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) to engage with local and international stakeholders.

Advisory support will be provided by a consortium of firms: KPMG as financial advisor, WSP as technical advisor, and Trowers & Hamlins as legal advisor, according to Consultancy-me.com.
