Appetite for nuclear energy grows across Africa

By: ESI Africa

Political leaders across Africa are increasingly recognizing the potential role of nuclear energy in addressing the continent's development and energy poverty challenges. This perspective was shared by Princess Mthombeni, founder of the advocacy group Africa4Nuclear.

Speaking on the sidelines of World Atomic Week in Moscow, Mthombeni noted that the strong attendance of African heads of state and senior officials underscored the growing political weight of nuclear energy. She observed that the event showcased advanced Russian nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors and floating power plants, while also highlighting the critical need for policy readiness and regulatory frameworks.

Mthombeni emphasized that transparency and public discussion are essential for successful nuclear programmes, cautioning that a lack of public understanding and buy-in in countries like Kenya and Ghana could hinder progress. She concluded that the visible engagement from African leaders signals a growing appreciation for nuclear technology's benefits in tackling inequality and energy poverty.
