Angola: New Gas Discovery Made in Lower Congo Basin

Angola has made a new gas discovery at Block 1/14 in the Lower Congo basin. The discovery was made at Gajajeira-01 exploration well, with initial assessments suggesting reserves upwards of one trillion cubic feet of gas and up to 100 million barrels of associated condensate.
Preliminary drill results at the well showcased several reservoirs with good mobility. The well, drilled 60km offshore, confirmed the presence of a hydrocarbon system. The Block 1/14 partners will continue evaluating the results as they prepare a suitable development plan for the find.
“The new discoveries are a motivating factor in our commitment to attracting private investment in the sector for the development and monetization of natural gas. It is an important resource for strengthening access to energy resources and domestic consumption, in addition to its significant role in boosting the petrochemical industry and fertilizer production in our country,” stated Paulino Jerónimo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Angola’s upstream regulator the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency.
Block 1/14 is being developed by a consortium comprising international energy companies Azule Energy (operator) and Equinor, alongside Angola’s national oil company Sonangol E&P and independent energy firm ACREP SA. The partners will continue with drilling activities at the block, targeting the last interval of the Lower Oligocene LO300 next.
“The Gajajeira-01 well is the first dedicated gas exploration well in the country, and its success reinforces our confidence in the potential of the Lower Congo Basin. We are proud to contribute to Angola’s long-term energy development with a focus on sustainability and energy security,” added Adriano Mongini, CEO of Azule Energy.
