ACCIONA Energía to Build 194 MW Wind Capacity in South Africa
ACCIONA Energía has reached financial close for two wind farms in South Africa with a combined capacity of 194 megawatts. Construction on the Zen (100 MW) and Bergrivier (94 MW) facilities, located in the Western Cape, is set to begin shortly, marking a significant investment in the country's renewable energy transition.
The projects are expected to produce approximately 580 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Etana Energy, ensuring stable revenue. Major corporate clients, including Growthpoint, V&A Waterfront, Tharisa Minerals, Petra Diamonds, and Autocast, have committed to offtake agreements. Once operational in mid-2027, the wind farms are projected to offset around 600,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
ACCIONA Energía will hold a 51% majority stake in the projects, with the remaining 49% owned by a joint venture between H1 Capital and Chariot Limited. This partnership blends international expertise with local investment, underscoring growing confidence in South Africa's renewable energy market as the country addresses electricity challenges and moves away from coal.
