Planet One eyes October spud for Ghana's Nya Gyidie-1X well
By: OrePulse
Planet One Oil & Gas Limited, operator of Ghana's Deepwater Cape Three Points block, said at Africa Oil Week 2026 in Accra that drilling on the Nya Gyidie-1X exploration well is set to get underway in October 2026.
Drilling will begin once the Noble Venturer rig finishes its current contract for another operator in Ghana, work the company expects to complete in September 2026.
Planet One is a unit of Planet One Group, the business controlled by Sanjeev Mansotra. The company secured its position on the Deepwater Cape Three Points block through a 2023 farm-in agreement with GOIL Upstream Limited, after ExxonMobil relinquished its stake.
Planet One now operates the block with a 75% participating interest, alongside the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, which holds 15%, and GOIL Upstream, which holds the remaining 10%.
"Planet One has done the work. We've matured the opportunity; we've secured the rig. Now we are ready to drill," Doreen Addotei, lead geoscientist at Planet One Oil & Gas Limited, said during a presentation at the conference.
The company said the well should yield fresh subsurface information to inform its assessment of the petroleum potential of the Deepwater Cape Three Points block, as Ghana continues to pursue upstream exploration and resource development.
