Ghana's GNPC, Malaysia's Petronas open upstream talks in Accra

Malaysia's state-owned energy company PETRONAS and Ghana's state oil firm, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), have begun a two-week round of technical and commercial talks in Accra on possible cooperation in Ghana's upstream petroleum sector.

The talks are being held inside GNPC's Research and Technology Centre. They are set to cover ground spanning subsurface geology, engineering, exploration, discovered assets, new-ventures work and commercial development, according to GNPC.

GNPC said its team for the engagement includes geologists, geophysicists, engineers and specialists in new ventures and commercial operations, who will exchange technical information with their PETRONAS counterparts and explore potential areas of collaboration.

Hamis Ussif, GNPC's deputy chief executive for finance, commercial and administration, greeted the visiting delegation "on behalf of GNPC's chief executive" and said the corporation was ready to support a productive dialogue.

Albert Longdon-Nyewan, GNPC's director of projects, said the organization was "interested in collaborating with PETRONAS to support investment in Ghana's petroleum sector."

GNPC framed the engagement as part of a wider effort to attract investment and technical know-how to develop Ghana's petroleum resources, while scouting opportunities for further collaboration down the line.
