UAE’s AMEA to Establish Africa’s Largest Solar, Battery storage project in Egypt

By: Egypt Oil & gas

AMEA Power, a rapidly expanding UAE-based renewable energy company, has announced plans to construct a major solar panel and battery storage project in Aswan. According to a company press release, the initiative is designed to strengthen the resilience of Egypt’s power system and advance the country’s clean energy transition.

Described as Africa’s largest single-site renewable energy and battery storage facility, the project will be developed through a partnership between AMEA Power, which will own 60%, and Japan’s Kyuden International Corporation, holding the remaining 40%. Financing will be provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) through a $570 million senior debt package, supplemented by concessional funding.

Integrating a 1,000 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), the project represents a total investment exceeding $700 million. Upon its expected operational date in June 2026, the facility is projected to generate over 3 million MWh of clean electricity annually. This output will be sufficient to power more than 500,000 households and offset approximately 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

The construction phase is anticipated to create over 4,000 jobs, with more than 95% of positions filled by Egyptian workers, thereby supporting local economic growth in Upper Egypt. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, stated that the project marks a defining step in Egypt’s clean energy journey, enhancing both energy security and long-term development.

AMEA Power has established a strong track record in Egypt through its ongoing partnership with the IFC, having delivered several key renewable energy projects that enhance the country’s power infrastructure. These include the 500 MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Aswan’s Kom Ombo area, commissioned in December 2024 to supply clean electricity to approximately 300,000 households annually.

The company also completed the 500 MW Amunet Wind Power Plant in Ras Ghareb ahead of schedule in June 2025. This facility stands as Africa’s largest operational wind farm, with a yearly output exceeding 2,500 GWh.

Furthermore, AMEA Power launched Egypt’s first utility-scale 300 MWh battery energy storage system in July 2025 as an extension of the Abydos project, a move that bolstered grid resilience. The new solar-plus-storage initiative in Aswan builds directly upon these successes, reinforcing AMEA Power’s role in Egypt’s clean energy expansion. The project also represents Kyuden International Corporation’s first investment in Egypt.
