Amid record-high gold prices driven by economic uncertainty and safe-haven demand, the world's top gold-mining companies are capitalizing on improved margins. In 2024, global gold production reached 3,300 metric tons, with China, Australia, and Russia leading as the top-producing countries. The industry's leading firms are now focused on responding to these favorable market dynamics.
Newmont was the top-producing company in 2024 with an output of 213.03 metric tons, operating a diverse global portfolio of mines. Its key assets include a major stake in Nevada Gold Mines and the Ahafo South complex in Ghana. The company has also been engaged in a significant divestiture of non-core assets to streamline its operations.
Barrick Mining secured the second position with 121.65 metric tons of attributable production. Its primary asset is its majority stake in Nevada Gold Mines, though its operations face uncertainty in Mali due to disputes with the government. Agnico Eagle Mines ranked third with 108.41 metric tons, deriving most of its output from its large Canadian mines, Detour Lake and Canadian Malartic.
The next tier of major producers was led by state-owned Navoi Mining and Metallurgy Company (NMMC) of Uzbekistan, which produced 96.42 metric tons primarily from the massive Muruntau mine. It was closely followed by Russia's Polyus, with 93.36 metric tons of production from its Siberian operations, most notably the Olimpiada mine.
Other significant contributors to global supply included AngloGold Ashanti and Kinross Gold. AngloGold's production of 82.35 metric tons was anchored by its Geita mine in Tanzania and a share of the Kibali mine in the DRC. Kinross produced 66.19 metric tons, with its Tasiast mine in Mauritania and Paracatu mine in Brazil being its largest assets.
Completing the list of the top ten producers were Gold Fields, China's Zijin Mining Group, and Harmony Gold Mining Company. These firms have globally diversified portfolios, with key operations in regions like Ghana, Australia, Colombia, and South Africa, where Harmony operates the deep-level Mponeng mine.
