Sudan’s Gold Production Reaches 70 tons in 2025

By: Ethiopian monitor

Sudan has reported a significant increase in gold production for 2025, with output reaching 70 tons—13% above the government’s target. According to a statement from the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, the mining sector contributed roughly 1.087 trillion Sudanese pounds (approximately $1.8 billion) in public revenues this year.

Minister of Minerals Nour Al-Daem Taha called for intensified efforts in 2026 and directed that new national projects be integrated into the sector’s development plan.

Gold is Sudan’s primary source of foreign currency. Although production peaked between 2017 and 2022, it collapsed to just two tons during the first five months of the conflict that began in April 2023. The sector showed a strong recovery in 2024, with output climbing to 64 tons, and has continued to grow this year despite ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced millions across Sudan and beyond.

According to Central Bank of Sudan statistics, gold accounted for 46.3% of the country’s non-oil exports in 2022, valued at $2.02 billion out of total non-oil exports of $4.357 billion. The latest figures underscore the mining sector’s resilience and critical role in Sudan’s fragile economy amid prolonged instability.
