South Africa: Enpower Secures Electricity Import-Export License

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has granted South African electricity trading firm Enpower Trading a license to import and export electricity from the broader Southern African region. The company is one of the first South African private firms to receive a license.
Enpower Trading will trade electricity within SADC through an existing agreement with Enterprise Power DRC, operator of the 300KV Kalumbila-Kolwezi Interconnector project connecting Zambia and the DRC. The approval will enable the firm to source electricity from regional independent power producers to address local electricity shortages, minimize renewable energy curtailment and expand revenue generation.
“Cross-border trading is a critical lever for improving supply reliability and affordability,” stated James Beatty, CEO of Enpower Trading. “We are proud to lead the way toward a flexible, secure and sustainable energy future with NERSA’s support.”
