Senegal to End Gas Imports by 2026

By: Energy capital & power

Senegal will stop importing natural gas from 2026, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced, citing expected annual savings of 140 billion CFA francs and a reduction in electricity costs. Local supply will replace costly imports used to fuel power generation.

The announcement follows Senegal’s emergence as an oil and gas producer, with the start of operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG development and Sangomar oilfield projects in 2024. These projects are expected to reduce petroleum imports while creating new business opportunities for the local private sector.

The prime minister reiterated that the state attaches “particular importance” to the national private sector, highlighting upcoming consultations on the Economic and Social Recovery Plan – a national strategy to address financial challenges and stimulate growth. Designed to be 90% financed by domestic resources, the plan prioritizes energy, infrastructure and industrial projects, underscoring a unique opportunity for private project developers.
