Prognosis & Predictions - Ayodeji Stephen – Hydrogen Energy Advisor, Nigeria

By: ESI Africa

In an annual prognosis and predictions feature, energy analyst Ayodeji Stephen reflects on 2025 as a defining year for Africa's energy transition. The year witnessed a steady convergence of renewable energy deployment, hydrogen innovation, and clean transport systems across the continent. This progress signals Africa's move toward sustainable industrialisation, with emerging hydrogen hubs and growing e-mobility interest solidifying its role in the global low-carbon economy. The analyst notes that the continent's biggest opportunity lies in building integrated systems that link power, mobility, and productive use to enhance livelihoods and climate resilience.

Looking ahead to 2026, four key trends are predicted. First, hydrogen development will shift from concept to implementation, supported by new policies and regional collaboration, exemplified by Nigeria's forthcoming hydrogen strategy. Second, urban transport decarbonisation will accelerate through the adoption of electric and hydrogen-powered fleets. Third, digitalisation within the e-mobility ecosystem will increase, enabling smarter charging and planning. Finally, a more integrated "nexus approach" to energy planning will gain traction, recognising the interdependence of water, energy, food, and health systems. The prognosis concludes that strategic coordination and aligned policies are essential for Africa to leapfrog into a future powered by clean, inclusive, and resilient energy systems.
