Namibia invited to tap $250m in green hydrogen project funding

By: ESI Africa

The opportunity, announced by the Namibian Government in partnership with investment firm Ninety One, will target large-scale commercial projects that support the country’s decarbonisation and green industrialisation ambitions.

Additional matching contributions are expected from global development banks and financial institutions.

According to NGH2P, the STIP aligns with Namibia’s Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which identifies green hydrogen as a strategic growth area.

The funding opportunity falls under CIF’s Industry Decarbonisation Programme, which focuses on hard-to-abate sectors such as iron and steel, cement, petrochemicals, non-ferrous metals, textiles, pulp and paper, shipping and clean technology supply chains.

The call for projects is open to private and public–private developers with high decarbonisation potential, ranging from early-stage concepts to mature industrial ventures.

Burgeoning green hydrogen sector in Namibia
This opportunity complements Namibia’s growing green hydrogen ambitions, anchored by the flagship Hyphen project, a $10 billion, fully vertically-integrated green hydrogen and ammonia development situated in the Tsau ǁ Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park.

It is the largest such initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa and a cornerstone of the country’s Southern Corridor Development Initiative (SCDI).

Phased development will generate up to two million tonnes of green ammonia annually by the end of the decade – from approximately 7GW of renewable energy generation and 3GW of electrolyser capacity – potentially avoiding five to six million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

The Namibian Government holds a 24% equity stake in the Hyphen project via the blended finance vehicle SDG Namibia One, structured with support from partners including Climate Fund Managers, Invest International, and the European Investment Bank.

More than 15,000 construction jobs and 3,000 permanent operational jobs are expected – 90% of which are slated for local Namibians.
