By:Logisticsmiddleeast

The inauguration of CMA Terminals Khalifa Port, a state-of-the-art container terminal developed at an investment of $845 million, marks a transformative milestone in Abu Dhabi’s logistics and trade landscape.

The terminal, a joint venture between CMA CGM (70%) and AD Ports Group (30%), was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Expanding Khalifa Port’s capacity

The addition of CMA Terminals increases Khalifa Port’s annual container capacity by 23%, reaching nearly 10 million TEUs, further solidifying its status as a regional and global trade hub.

Phase 1 of the project introduces an 800-metre quay wall, a depth of 18.5 metres, 8 Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, and 20 Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (e-RTG) cranes, contributing 1.8 million TEUs of additional capacity.

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group, said, “This new facility strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position on the global trade map and contributes to economic diversification in line with our leadership’s vision.”

“CMA Terminals Khalifa Port cements AD Ports Group’s role as a global leader in sustainable port operations.”

Sustainability and advanced technology

The new terminal exemplifies innovation, incorporating shore-power systems to reduce vessel emissions, solar energy installations, and the region’s first net zero carbon administration building, recognised by the MENA Green Building Awards.

The facility is also ready for rail connectivity, advancing multimodal logistics in Abu Dhabi.

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, stated, “The inauguration of this terminal consolidates Abu Dhabi’s position as a global trade hub. Together with AD Ports Group, we deliver a modern facility that prioritises innovation and sustainability, driving regional shipping and logistics activities.”

The CMA CGM terminal elevates Khalifa Port as a hub for three of the world’s top five shipping companies, enhancing maritime and inland connectivity.

With its strategic design, the terminal aligns with the UAE’s circular economy goals by recycling construction materials and reducing operational waste.
