India's KP Group expands green energy ambitions to Dubai

By: Utilities middle east

India’s KP Group, one of the country’s leading renewable energy companies, is setting its sights on Dubai as part of its next phase of international growth.

Founded and led by Dr Faruk G. Patel, the company has grown from modest beginnings into a Rs165 billion enterprise, playing a central role in India’s green energy revolution across solar, wind, hydrogen, and EV infrastructure.

During a recent visit to Dubai, Dr Patel confirmed that the company is in early discussions with UAE partners. “We have had some fruitful initial discussions and hope to have something more concrete soon,” he told Khaleej Times.

Over the past three decades, KP Group has commissioned more than 2 GW of solar and wind projects, with over 4 GW currently in the pipeline and a target of 10 GW by 2030. Under its Independent Power Producer (IPP) and Captive Power Producer (CPP) segments, the company is developing large-scale solar projects totaling 1 GW at Khavda in Gujarat.

The group is also expanding into green hydrogen, EV fuel stations, and smart energy storage, having signed several MoUs with the Government of Gujarat. Its vertically integrated operations span engineering, galvanising, EPC, and power generation, supporting India’s broader renewable infrastructure.

Earlier this year, KP Group was recognised for its sustainability and innovation initiatives through the KP Human Development Foundation, which drives community and social projects. The group and its chairman have been featured in Forbes and Fortune, and Dr Patel has delivered lectures at IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Bombay.

Recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his contribution to sustainable development, Dr Patel continues to inspire through his vision of “Building a Greener Tomorrow.” His entrepreneurial journey — from unloading bricks himself in his logistics days to leading one of India’s top renewable energy players — reflects resilience and foresight.

His shift toward renewables began when India, under then–Chief Minister Narendra Modi, announced its landmark solar initiative. Recognising the sector’s long-term potential, he transformed KP Group into a key player under KPI Green Energy Ltd, which today has energised more than 500 MW of its own IPP capacity, contributing around 13% of total group revenue.

Alongside his business ventures, Dr Patel supports several philanthropic causes, including old-age homes and a centre for children with special needs.

“I have 500 MW of my own IPP capacity. Each MW requires 3,000 panels — that’s 1.5 million panels — and every single one is made in India,” he said. “Renewable energy is not just a business; it’s the key to India’s self-reliance and sustainability.”
