Five miners presumed dead after mudslide, South African minister says
Five miners missing since Tuesday following a mudslide at the Ekapa diamond mine in South Africa are now presumed dead, South Africa's mining minister Gwede Mantashe said while visiting the mine, local television station eNCA reported.
The company that operates the mine, Ekapa Mining, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Wednesday industry body the Minerals Council South Africa said it had deployed a senior team to try to help find the missing people.
South Africa's government and mining industry have been making efforts to reduce mine deaths and injuries, part of a campaign called "Zero Harm". Last year the country recorded its lowest-ever number of mine deaths, 41.
