EMSTEEL Launches TrueGreen Sustainability Identity to Advance Low-Carbon Steel Production

By: Solar quarter

Abu Dhabi-based EMSTEEL Group, one of the region’s largest publicly traded steel and building materials manufacturers, has unveiled a new strategic sustainability identity named TrueGreen™. This initiative consolidates the company's decades of decarbonisation efforts under a unified platform.

The launch positions EMSTEEL as a benchmark for transparency and accountability in sustainable steel production. This follows recent milestones where the company became the first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to earn ResponsibleSteel™ certification and launched the world’s first pilot of electric process gas heaters in steelmaking.

These efforts build on the company's pioneering role in industrial decarbonisation, which includes a carbon capture project with ADNOC’s Al Reyadah facility, sourcing clean energy, and introducing the region’s first hydrogen-based steelmaking pilot in partnership with Masdar. EMSTEEL's low-carbon steel has already been used in Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque on Yas Island.

Through the TrueGreen™ platform, EMSTEEL will provide customers with internationally recognised sustainability credentials to help them comply with regulations like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Each TrueGreen™ product will be supported by independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and digital monitoring systems.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, stated that TrueGreen™ represents the company's unwavering commitment to sustainable steel. The initiative aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, and with an emission intensity of 0.67 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel, EMSTEEL is positioning the UAE as a leader in industrial decarbonisation.

Globally, EMSTEEL has been recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion and appointed Co-Chair of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation. The company plans to expand the TrueGreen™ initiative through collaboration with various national and international bodies to shape the future of low-carbon construction.
