Dubai Airports Powers Up Green Infrastructure with Massive Lighting Retrofit Targeting 47 Million kWh in Energy Savings

In a decisive stride toward climate-resilient operations, Dubai Airports has launched the final phase of its airport-wide lighting retrofit initiative—setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in global aviation. The project, in partnership with Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ESCO), will replace over 180,000 lighting units at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC), completing what is now one of the region’s most ambitious sustainability projects in airport history.

Combined with 150,000 retrofitted fixtures from a previous phase, Dubai’s aviation hub is upgrading more than 330,000 lighting units. This isn’t just an infrastructure upgrade—it’s a transformational leap toward a greener aviation future.

Energy Efficiency Goes Mainstream in Airport Operations

This large-scale lighting project targets one of the most energy-intensive elements of airport operations—lighting. Terminals, concourses, lounges, airfields, and passenger walkways require constant illumination, driving massive electricity demand. Replacing outdated lighting systems with modern, energy-saving alternatives is a simple yet high-impact strategy.

The results speak volumes. Once complete, the retrofit is projected to reduce energy consumption by 47 million kilowatt-hours annually. That’s enough to power more than 4,300 homes for a full year. It also translates into significant carbon reduction—an essential move in a world where aviation is under pressure to decarbonize fast.

AED 20 Million in Annual Savings: Sustainability Makes Business Sense

Going green isn’t just about goodwill—it’s about smart economics. Dubai Airports is expected to save over AED 20 million annually in energy costs thanks to this retrofit. These savings reflect the long-term benefits of integrating sustainability into operational strategy.
