Baker McKenzie Advises AMEA Power on Africa’s Largest Solar-Plus-Storage Project in Egypt

By: Utilities Middle east

Baker McKenzie’s Cairo office has acted as legal counsel to AMEA Power on the development and financing of Africa’s largest single-site solar and battery energy storage project, a 1,000 MW solar PV facility integrated with 600 MWh of battery storage in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate.

The USD 700 million project is jointly owned by AMEA Power and Kyuden International Corporation and is scheduled to reach commercial operation in June 2026. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate more than 3 million MWh of clean electricity annually, supplying power to over 500,000 Egyptian households and offsetting approximately 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Baker McKenzie advised AMEA Power across all stages of the project, including regulatory engagement with the Egyptian government, early construction mobilisation, land and permitting matters, and the drafting and negotiation of key project and financing documentation. The firm also supported AMEA Power in achieving financial close with a consortium of international lenders led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The legal team was led by Mohamed Elharmy, Partner in Projects and Finance, alongside partners Ghada El Ehwany (Corporate/Commercial), Hani Nassef (M&A) and Mohamed Elfar (Antitrust), supported by a wider team from the firm’s Cairo office.

Commenting on the transaction, Mohamed Elharmy said the project marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s clean energy transition, combining large-scale solar generation with battery storage to enhance grid stability and deliver low-carbon power at scale. He noted that the project builds on the successful delivery of the 500 MW solar and 300 MWh battery Abydos I project, further demonstrating the bankability of integrated renewable and storage projects in Egypt.

Baker McKenzie’s Cairo office has advised on a number of landmark energy and infrastructure projects in Egypt, with a focus on supporting large-scale investments that contribute to energy security and long-term sustainable growth.
