South African Court Blocks TotalEnergies’ Exploration License
A South African court has suspended a permit previously granted to TotalEnergies by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment to conduct oil and gas exploration in an ultra-deepwater block operated by TotalEnergies.
The court has ordered for the permit to be reopened for public consultation, after which TotalEnergies and its project partners can reapply for the license.
The decision follows a legal challenge brought forward by environmental advocacy groups. The contested permit covers an offshore block of approximately 10,000 square kilometers near Cape Town.
TotalEnergies was investing in the block in partnership with global major Shell and South Africa’s national oil company, PetroSA.
