Improving health and safety are the South African mining industry’s top priority...

The South African mining industry has a long history of high rates of occupational diseases, driven by multiple factors, including the labour-intensive nature of the mining methods, geology with high silica content and social circumstances. Three diseases have been prominent for decades: tuberculosis (TB), noise induced hearing loss and silicosis. Most industry strategies have been focussed on the reduction and elimination of these diseases. The strategies and initiatives have been at the tripartite level, through the Mine Health and Safety Council, and through employers as a collective, led by the Minerals Council South Africa and at company level....
