TotalEnergies Delegation Joins AOG 2025 Amid Major Project Advancements

By: Energy capital & power

Integrated multi-energy company TotalEnergies is advancing a diverse energy portfolio in Angola, striving to increase oil and gas production while introducing alternative technologies such as solar and green hydrogen to the market. Operating in the country since 1953, the TotalEnergies is leveraging its extensive footprint to advance large-scale projects, aligned with the country’s goal of sustaining oil production above one million barrels per day (bpd).

Amid this growth, TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President – Africa, Mike Sangster, and Managing Director for Angola, Martin Deffontaines, have joined the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference as speakers. During the event, Sangster and Deffontaines are expected to share insight into the company’s Angolan portfolio, including ongoing projects, future investments and potential collaboration. As the premier event for the industry, AOG 2025 serves as a vital platform to advance investment and development as the country strives towards greater fuel security and economic growth.

Sangster and Deffontaines’ participation comes as TotalEnergies announces the start of production at the Begonia field development – the first inter-block development in Angola – as well as the CLOV Phase 3 project. Situated offshore in Block 17/06, the Begonia project comprises the development of five wells tied back to the operational Pazflor FPSO. With operations commencing in July 2025, the project has added 30,000 bpd to the FPSO’s output. For its part, the CLOV Phase 3 project – situated in Block 17 -, features four wells tied back to the CLOV FPSO. The project also adds 30,000 bpd to Angola’s production portfolio, showcasing the role collaboration plays in bolstering the country’s production capacity.

Beyond these projects and with stakes in various deep and ultra-deep offshore oil licenses as well as interests in the Angola LNG liquefaction plant, TotalEnergies has cemented its role as a major global operator in Angola. Upcoming projects affirm its position in the market, including the $6 billion Kaminho Deepwater Development – the first large deepwater project in the Kwanza basin. TotalEnergies and its partners on Block 20/11 – including Petronas and Sonangol – achieved a final investment decision for the project in 2024, with production on track for 2028. The project involves the conversion of a Very Large Crude Carrier to an all-electric Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit – the seventh deployed by the company in Angola. Set to be connected to a subsea production network, the unit will have a production capacity of 70,000 bpd. The Kaminho project is expected to lay the foundation for enhanced deepwater production at a time when Angola is seeking new investment to address natural declines in crude output.

Beyond Kaminho, TotalEnergies is also advancing exploration efforts in the country, targeting new discoveries in proven petroleum provinces. In February 2025, the company signed an agreement with ExxonMobil and Angola’s upstream regulator the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG) for the study and evaluation of the Free Areas of Blocks 17/06 and 32/21. If the studies are successful, the companies will conclude the concession contracts with the ANPG for the Free Areas. The agreement builds on positive exploration results at the blocks. Block 17 – operated by TotalEnergies – already features six FPSO vessels and has been producing since 2001. It also features the Kaombo development. With the new agreement, TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil seeks to identify new leads in support of greater production at the assets.

Meanwhile, forming part of TotalEnergies’ multi-energy strategy in Angola, the company is developing a solar project in partnership with Angola’s national oil company Sonangol. Dubbed the Quilemba Solar PV Park, the project will have a capacity of 35 MW and is expected to be completed by late-2025 or early 2026. The project is situated in the Huila Province and aligns closely with the goals of the nation to diversify the energy mix by incorporating renewable energy technologies. During AOG 2025, Sangster and Deffontaines are anticipated to provide an update on these projects. Their participation reflects TotalEnergies’ broader commitment to Angola’s oil and gas future, signaling strategic opportunities for new investments to be made.
