By: Ornoir Africa

Home to around 30% of the world's mineral reserves, Africa remains a key player in the global mining industry. From precious metals such as gold and platinum to strategic minerals such as cobalt and lithium, the continent attracts mining companies of both international and local stature. Here is a ranking of the 10 most influential mining companies in Africa, based on their economic impact, production and regional presence.

1. Anglo American Platinum (South Africa)

Anglo American Platinum is the world's leading platinum producer, with a market capitalisation of USD 12.5 billion (December 2023). Based in Johannesburg, the company operates mines in the Bushveld complex, contributing around 38% of the world's platinum supply. It plays a crucial role in the South African economy, where the mining sector accounts for a significant proportion of GDP.

2. Barrick Gold (Mali, Tanzania, RDC)

Canadian giant Barrick Gold is a pillar of gold mining in Africa. Despite tensions in Mali, where its operations at Loulo-Gounkoto were suspended in 2024, the company plans to resume in 2025. With annual production of more than 6.5 million ounces of gold across the continent, Barrick remains a force to be reckoned with.

3. Gold Fields (South Africa, Ghana)

Gold Fields, also based in South Africa, is one of the continent's largest gold companies. It operates mines such as South Deep in South Africa and Tarkwa in Ghana. With a market capitalisation of USD 8.98 billion, it excels at managing large-scale projects.

4. AngloGold Ashanti (South Africa, Ghana, DRC)

Present in 10 countries, AngloGold Ashanti is a historic leader in African gold. Its operations include the Mponeng mine, the deepest in the world, and projects in Ghana and the DRC. By 2021, its revenues will have reached USD 4.03 billion, reflecting its economic influence.

5. Sibanye-Stillwater (South Africa)

Sibanye-Stillwater stands out for its diversified production of platinum, palladium and gold. Based in Johannesburg, it is the third largest gold producer in Africa and a key player in platinum group metals (PGMs), which are essential to the automotive industry.

6. B2Gold (Mali, Namibia)

This Canadian company excels in low-cost gold mining. Its flagship mines, such as Fekola in Mali, produced record volumes in 2024. B2Gold is strengthening its position through sustainable practices and targeted expansion in West Africa.

7. Montage Gold (Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea)

Montage Gold, also based in Canada, is currently building the largest gold mine in Côte d'Ivoire, scheduled for completion in 2027. Its strategic partnership with African Gold for the Didievi project illustrates its growing ambition in the region.

8. African Rainbow Minerals (South Africa)

Founded by South African tycoon Patrice Motsepe, African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) is a diversified player in gold, platinum, iron and copper. ARM combines organic growth and acquisitions to maintain its influence on the continent.

9. Managem Group (Morocco, multi-country)

This Moroccan company, a subsidiary of Société Nationale d'Investissement, excels in the extraction of gold, cobalt and copper. With operations in Morocco, Gabon and the DRC, Managem relies on innovation and sustainability to stand out from the crowd.

10. Endeavour Mining (Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Mali)

London-listed Endeavour Mining is a leading West African gold miner. With mines such as Sabodala-Massawa in Senegal and Ity in Côte d'Ivoire, it produced more than 1.5 million ounces in 2024, consolidating its place among the giants of the sector.

These companies, both local and international, are shaping the African economy by exploiting its mineral wealth. However, they are facing growing challenges: geopolitical tensions, environmental demands and price fluctuations. Their ability to innovate and adapt will determine their influence in the years to come, as Africa continues to play a strategic role in the global supply of minerals.
