Tinubu Pledges to Revolutionize Nigeria’s Power Sector with Siemens
A Renewed Commitment to Power
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) with Siemens Energy, pledging full government support to transform Nigeria's electricity supply. He emphasized that a robust power sector is fundamental to driving the nation's industrial, educational, and healthcare development.
Power as a Cornerstone for Growth
During a meeting with a Siemens Energy delegation at the State House, President Tinubu articulated the critical importance of reliable electricity. He described power as "the most significant discovery of humanity in the last 1,000 years," stating unequivocally that there can be no industrial growth or economic development without it.
Strategic Implementation and Recent Milestones
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, outlined significant progress under the PPI. He cited key sector reforms such as the decentralisation of the market, the Electricity Act 2023, and a new National Integrated Electricity Policy. These efforts have reportedly attracted over $2 billion in investments, with Siemens already adding 984MW of transmission capacity through new substations and transformers.
Phased Expansion of Grid Capacity
The PPI is being executed in structured phases to systematically upgrade the national grid. Phase One involves critical upgrades and new installations in several cities, with two substations slated for completion by 2026. The subsequent Phase One-Batch Two is even more ambitious, planning the construction of 16 new substations that will collectively deliver 4,104MW of power.
Local Investment and Partnership Benefits
Siemens Energy's Managing Director, Dietmar Siersdorfer, highlighted the PPI as a platform for long-term prosperity, emphasizing its significant local benefits. He pointed to the direct engagement of Nigerian professionals, extensive job creation in local communities, and valuable technology transfer as core components that demonstrate the strength and viability of the partnership.
International Backing for the Initiative
The initiative continues to receive strong international support. A representative from the German Embassy assured the Nigerian government of Germany's continued backing for the PPI. This diplomatic endorsement reinforces the collaborative effort between the two nations to achieve a stable and sufficient power supply for Nigeria.
