The Gambia Targets 90% Electricity Access by End of 2025
The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow announced that 90% of Gambians are expected to have access to electricity by the end of 2025.
President Barrow highlighted recent developments in The Gambia’s energy sector, including the inauguration of The Gambia’s first utility-scale solar power plant in Jambur, with a capacity of 23 MW. He also mentioned an ongoing tender for an additional 50 MW solar power plant in Jarra Soma, which could be expanded to 150 MW of renewable energy.
To support universal access to electricity, the government has introduced a subsidy program, reducing the cost of electricity meters from 8,500 dalasis to 500 dalasis in project-covered areas. As a result, 72,000 new household connections were registered as of December 2024.
Additionally, the government approved the unbundling of the National Water and Electricity Company into two separate entities—one for water and one for electricity—to improve service delivery and accountability.
In addition to energy developments, Barrow stated that the Trans-Gambia Special Economic Zone project is progressing as part of the Praia-Dakar-Abidjan-Lagos multimodal corridor. The feasibility study was conducted with support from the African Development Bank and ECOWAS.
