NSW to reduce logistics cost in Nigeria by 30%

By: Punch

In a significant move to overhaul its trade ecosystem, Nigeria has officially launched the National Single Window (NSW) initiative, a digital platform projected to reduce the country's logistics costs by 25% to 30%. The announcement was made during a stakeholders' forum in Lagos jointly organized by the NSW Secretariat and the Nigeria Customs Service.

A Transformative Digital Solution

The NSW is a unified digital platform that allows all parties involved in trade and transport—importers, exporters, banks, customs, and port operators—to submit documents and data through a single interface. This system is designed to eliminate the current fragmented processes, duplication of paperwork, and delays that have long plagued Nigerian ports.

Mr. Kingsley Igwe, Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), emphasized the project's transformative potential. "For the logistics and freight forwarding community... this will lead to lower costs, faster delivery, and higher throughput," he stated, highlighting that the platform would provide predictable operations and digitally-tracked consignments.

Aligning with Global Trade Hubs

The initiative models successful implementations in countries like Singapore, South Korea, and Rwanda, where similar trade facilitation reforms have boosted efficiency and investment. The NSW is also critical for Nigeria to fully leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), ensuring its trade processes align with continental best practices.

Key benefits outlined by officials include:

For Businesses: Faster clearance of raw materials and machinery, enabling manufacturers to reduce downtime and enhance productivity.

For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Simplified, affordable, and transparent access to trade facilitation tools.

For Government: Real-time data on trade flows to strengthen security, cut revenue leakages, and improve Nigeria's ease of doing business rankings.

Phased Implementation

Mr. Tola Fakolade, Director of the NSW Project, announced that the rollout will begin with a Phase One launch in March 2026, initially involving select stakeholders. The success of the project was repeatedly stressed to depend on collaboration and a willingness to adopt new ways of working from all parties involved in cross-border trade.
