By: AGBI

The Moroccan government has reportedly allocated MAD38 billion ($3.7 billion) to the state-owned National Airports Authority to develop airport infrastructure to support economic growth.

The government has allocated MAD25 billion for expanding and modernising airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez, Morocco World News reported.

One of the major projects includes the construction of a new international air terminal, which will increase Casablanca airport’s capacity to 44 million passengers annually.

Additionally, a runway will be constructed at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca.

The remaining MAD13 billion will be used for maintenance, modernisation and land acquisition.

The investment will be made over a period of five years, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch said, adding it will transform the country into a regional aviation hub.

The government has set a target of 17.5 million annual visitors by 2026, increasing to 26 million by 2030, when the country co-hosts the Fifa World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
