Mnangagwa fires Zimbabwe’s mines minister
Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed Mines Minister Winston Chitando and appointed his deputy, Polite Kambamura, as the new minister in a surprise cabinet reshuffle. The change, announced late Monday, did not provide a reason for Chitando’s removal.
Kambamura, who was immediately sworn in, is expected to oversee ongoing mining reforms, regulatory adjustments, and expansion projects aimed at boosting Zimbabwe’s competitiveness in the global mineral sector. Chitando, a former mining executive, had led the ministry since 2017, during a period focused on attracting investment and formalizing artisanal mining.
The move highlights the strategic importance of mining to Zimbabwe’s economic recovery agenda, particularly as the country seeks to capitalize on growing global interest in its lithium and platinum resources.
