Mine Mentor Exchange Programme launched to empower next gen mining talent

By: African mining

COMODEX has announced the official launch of the Mine Mentor Exchange Programme (MMEP) – a bold, industry-driven initiative aimed at equipping South Africa’s mining students and graduates with the technical, workplace and leadership skills they need to succeed in a modern mining environment. To raise funds and awareness for the MMEP, COMODEX will host the Fairways for Futures Golf Day on 18 July 2025 (Mandela Day).

The MMEP is a first-of-its-kind, 12-month development programme that bridges the gap between education and employment by combining mentorship, technical training, site visits, experiential learning, and behavioural development into one outcome-based journey.

“With over 70% of mining companies reporting a lack of industry-ready graduates and only 35% of students feeling confident about their workplace readiness, this programme is not just timely—it’s essential,” says Tanya Graham, MD of COMODEX and founder of the MMEP. “We are responding to a critical need in the sector and creating a sustainable solution for future talent.”

What makes the MMEP unique is its holistic structure. Students receive coaching, exposure to real mining environments, soft skills development, and participation in leadership experiences such as Equine-Assisted Learning & Development (EALD) and supervisory training. The programme culminates in a final assessment and portfolio presentation, with successful candidates receiving a certificate of competence.

Golf Day Fundraiser – 18 July 2025

The COMODEX Fairways for Futures Golf Day on 18 July 2025 (Mandela Day) is planned as a fundraising event to drive Student Sponsorships . The event will take place at Irene Country Club, Centurion and brings together industry leaders, suppliers and professionals for a day of purpose-driven networking and giving back.

The theme for this year’s event is “67 Swings for 67 Minutes of Impact,” aligning with Mandela Day’s ethos of dedicating time to service and empowerment. All proceeds from the Golf Day will go towards sponsoring students for the 2025 and 2026 MMEP cohorts.

The Fairways for Futures Golf Day will also feature branded holes, competitions and a showcase of the student impact journey. For every student sponsored by an individual or company, COMODEX has committed to match the sponsorship – effectively doubling the impact.

“We’re not just calling for sponsorships; we’re calling for partnerships,” adds Graham. “From hosting site visits to mentoring and offering internships, there are many ways for the industry to get involved.”

COMODEX invites all industry stakeholders, sponsors and educational institutions to join the movement. Together, we can reshape the future of mining by investing in those who will lead it.
