Ghana is set to host the Ghana Transport and Logistics Fair from September 3-6 in Accra. The event, themed “Resetting Ghana’s Transport Sector for Improved Connectivity, Innovation and Investment,” is expected to bring together about 200 exhibitors from 50 countries and 10,000 attendees, including industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers.

A "Bold National Statement"

Unveiling the event, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated that the fair is intended to be more than an exhibition, but a "bold national statement" and a deliberate conversation on innovation and investment. He emphasized that the transport and logistics sector is the backbone of the economy.

Pursuing a Comprehensive Reform Agenda

Minister Nikpe outlined the ministry's comprehensive reform agenda, which includes:

• Modernizing rails and the marine division.
• Improving infrastructure to enhance connectivity and reduce logistics costs.
• Digitizing customs operations to enhance transparency.
• Expanding transport networks, including inland water transport and regional rail corridors.
• Strengthening regulatory frameworks to ensure safety and professionalism.

Positioning Ghana as a Regional Hub

The Minister stated that Ghana is strategically positioned to become the transport and logistics hub of West Africa. He asserted that with the right investment, digitalization, and infrastructure, the country could unlock vast business opportunities, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, added that the fair would help boost investments in the region's Eastern Corridor road network, ferry services on Lake Volta, and the expansion of the Ho Airport, projects he said would create jobs and boost trade.

Addressing Sector Challenges

The CEO of the organizing firm, Dr. Nat Nsorko, noted that while the transport sector underpins trade and development, it faces persistent challenges including inadequate infrastructure, congestion, and limited investment.

The fair's strategic objectives are to showcase innovations and reforms, promote public-private partnerships, attract regional and global investment, and foster inclusive and sustainable transport access.
