Ethiopian Maritime Earns 108 Billion Birr Revenue

By: Ethio negari

The Ethiopian Maritime Transport and Logistics (EMTL) has announced that it earned more than 108 billion birr in revenue during the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year (2024/2025 Gregorian calendar).

CEO Beriso Amelo briefed the media on the institution’s key achievements and performance during the fiscal year.

He noted that the organization focused on several strategic priorities, including boosting revenue, increasing the loading capacity of ships and trucks, improving service efficiency and accessibility, and modernizing operations through digital technologies.

According to Beriso, the initial revenue target was 101.1 billion birr, but the organization surpassed expectations by collecting over 108 billion birr, achieving more than 100 percent of its annual goal.

He attributed this impressive performance to recent macroeconomic reforms, which he said played a vital role in improving the logistics sector’s performance.

He also pointed out that despite ongoing global economic uncertainties, the enterprise managed to overcome external pressures affecting maritime services and maintained a steady operational pace.

In a related development, EMTL announced in March 2025 its plan to expand the country’s cargo fleet with the procurement of six new vessels.

The organization revealed that two Ultramax dry bulk carriers, each with a carrying capacity of 62,000 tons, will be acquired and deployed in the near future.

The remaining four vessels are expected to be procured over the coming years, He said.

These ships are being purchased to strengthen Ethiopia’s import and export trade capacity and reduce dependency on foreign-owned shipping services. At present, Ethiopia reportedly operates a fleet of 10 vessels.

It is worth noting that two years ago, Ethiopia took delivery of a cargo ship with a capacity exceeding 60,000 tons, marking a significant step in expanding its maritime capabilities.

In line with efforts to modernize its fleet and improve operational efficiency, EMTL recently sold two older vessels, the Bahir Dar and Hawassa, citing operational losses.

At the time, the organization also announced the purchase of a new ship, the Abay, from China to replace the decommissioned vessels.

These measures reflect EMTL’s commitment to strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure and ensuring reliable and cost-effective logistics services to support Ethiopia’s growing economy.
