East Africa’s modern mineral testing lab launched in Dodoma

Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, in Dodoma today during the foundation stone laying ceremony, said the new laboratory will be a game-changer for Tanzanians, helping to eliminate unproductive and speculative mining practices while stimulating the sector’s development.
He said that in this fiscal year’s budget, they have allocated significant funds for mineral research to ensure that Tanzanians are moved away from unproductive and speculative mining.
“In this year’s budget, significant funds have been allocated to mineral research to ensure that Tanzanians move away from unproductive mining. Two years ago, I discussed with Geological Survey of Tanzania staff my desire to see a modern laboratory, and now this vision is becoming a reality,” Mavunde said.
He emphasized that the mining sector cannot grow without proper research and thanked GST staff for their cooperation in making the project possible.
Mavunde also noted that history is being made with the construction of one of the largest laboratories in East and Central Africa, which will conduct mineral sample testing and provide services to other countries in the region.
Acting GST Executive Director, Notka Banteze, described the event as a major milestone. He explained that the existing laboratory, built in 1926, is outdated, and the new construction will address infrastructure challenges and enhance service delivery.
The modern laboratory is expected to revolutionize mineral research in the region, supporting more effective and productive mining practices and positioning Tanzania as a hub for advanced mineral testing in East Africa.
