Atiwa East DCE denies jail rumors, vows to continue fight against illegal mining

By: Ghana news agency

Ernest Owusu Ntim, the District Chief Executive for Atiwa East in Ghana, has denied rumors that he was jailed, dismissing them as "false and malicious propaganda." He stated that these rumors are aimed at undermining his efforts to combat illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, in the district.

In an official statement, Ntim asserted that his commitment to enforcing environmental laws and fighting illegal mining has faced stiff opposition, leading to false allegations against him. He emphasized that such tactics would not deter him from continuing his work to address environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.

The statement also called on citizens to disregard the false reports and remain calm, assuring them that the DCE is working to resolve the issue. Ntim announced plans for a comprehensive media engagement to address public concerns.

This denial follows a recent court ruling in which the Koforidua High Court fined Ntim GH¢12,000 for contempt in a case related to illegal mining. The DCE has appealed the verdict, maintaining his innocence and vowing to continue his fight against illegal mining activities.
