Africa must take ownership of its mining future
Ambassador of Economic Development at the Pan-African Parliament, speaking at the Zimbabwe Mining and Energy Sunrise Summit 2025, emphasised that Africa must take responsibility for its mining future.
She highlighted the need for countries to learn from one another, drawing on South Africa’s mining charter as an example of how local ownership, community participation, skills development and beneficiation can be embedded in policy.
Motsepe stressed the importance of employing and training local communities, ensuring fair taxation, and curbing practices such as transfer pricing and offshore listings that drain value from the continent.
She pointed to successful community shareholding models in South Africa to illustrate how mining can drive rural development. Motsepe reiterated that Africa must set clear, continent-wide standards for investors and ensure that mining benefits are retained locally—stating that the responsibility ultimately rests with Africans themselves.
