South Africa plans to revive its nuclear power initiatives, as announced by Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The focus is on rebuilding domestic expertise and entering global reactor fuel markets. Key projects include the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) program and partnerships with universities for training new nuclear scientists, led by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA). The government aims to compete with China in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) market and is progressing with a multi-purpose research reactor following a 2021 Cabinet decision, supported by significant investment.
