The advocacy group Global Rights has warned that the push for "green mining" in West Africa must not repeat the deadly injustices of past extractive industries. Speaking at a regional forum, the director highlighted tragedies like the lead poisoning that killed hundreds of children in Zamfara as a stark example of the human cost of mining. She insisted that the rising demand for minerals like lithium and cobalt for renewable energy cannot come at the expense of community rights and survival. The principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) must be central to ensure communities are active partners, not victims, in resource extraction. The central question posed is how to avoid reproducing old patterns of exploitation in the transition to cleaner energy....
